What is the Fiber Exchange?

A Fiber Exchange is when a large group of sewists each buys a skein of yarn (or in this Fiber Exchange, three skeins), cut it into shorter useable lengths (10 feet/3 meters from each skein), and then swap the fibers between other participants. The result is that each person ends up with a wide variety of fibers to try out for couching or surface embellishment projects. You will end up with 60 different fibers from the Fiber Exchange.

If you would like a variety of yarns and novelty fibers to use in future projects without spending a ton of money, then join us for the Sewing Mastery Stitching Cosmos 2021 Fiber Exchange! A Fiber Exchange is a cost-effective way to increase your fiber collection by exchanging with 20 other people.

Can’t wait to start!! I have a large number of really sick relatives & this will distract me while I work on winding fibers.
Thank you Sara for organizing this.

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Linda,

      You are welcome!

  2. Katie says:

Sara, what a fun idea! I am enrolled in the Embroidery Essentials course and would like to participate. If not, I completely understand.

  3. Giuliana Nakashima says:

OK this was the kick in the pants to make me get started on the class. I already have all the feet so really no excuse just trying to find the time so since I have all this fabulous Yarn I should be sharing it and heck I get more fabulous Yarn and exchange LOL

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Giuliana,

      Wonderful! It’s time to play!

      Sara Snuggerud

  4. Brenda says:

This will be my first exchange and I can’t wait to participate. I am taking the cosmo class and have learned so much more about my machine.

  5. Donna Bofenkamp says:

I am enrolled in the Embroidery Essentials course and plan to enroll in The Stitching Cosmos soon. What size card should we use to wrap the fibers? I’m excited.

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Donna,

You can do any size card that works for your fibers. I did mine 3″ x 10″.

  6. Mary Gambriel says:

Did anyone have a problem trying to obtain the pre-paid priority envelope (no stamps) to be included from the post office? Trying to get my fibers mailed for the exchange this week.

    1. Sara says:

Your post office should be able to provide you with this.

  7. Jean Pici says:

Enrolled in Cosmos several moons ago but haven’t started yet — life got in the way. Hope to get going soon. In the meantime, I’d like to do this exchange and have a question — Does it have to be yarn? Could it be specialty ribbon or stringed sequins or other kinds of trim? I have lots to share.

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Jean,

Yes, you are welcome to branch out a little. Keep in mind that most students will be using the fibers through a couching foot. If you are unsure which yarns would be best, please watch the Lesson on Couching before participating in the Fiber Exchange.

  8. julie kaplan says:

Hello Everyone……I am very excited to be participating in my first fiber exchange. Currently I am enrolled in both the Stitching Cosmos and the Embroidery Essentials classes. I have watched some of the Embroidery classes, but I want to complete the Cosmos class first. Sew much fun!

  9. Dorann Perry says:

    Hi Sara,
I want to be part of the September fiber exchange, but know my envelope will not get there in time. I have the fibers, will cut and wrap them tonight and mail them tomorrow. Hope you can be a little lenient with the time frame. Looking forward getting the variety of fibers. Thanks for organizing and shipping.

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Dorann,

Thank you for joining the Fiber Exchange. I plan to do the exchange around September 20th so you should be good. 😉

      Happy Sewing!

      Sara Snuggerud

  10. Lesley A Breau says:

I’m late to the party, but my exchange package is on the way from New Brunswick.

    Thanks Lesley

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Lesley,

No problem. If it does not make it in time for September’s Fiber Exchange we will keep it for the January 2022 Fiber Exchange.
