Use the Power of Repetition to Elevate Your Embroidery Skills

Hands-on experience with the added element of the power of repetition is the most effective way to master a new skill such as machine embroidery.

I recently was roped into (ok, I volunteered) to embroider 25 towels as parting gifts for our day-long Sailing Camp here in South Dakota.

I was quickly reminded of the benefits of skills mastered when you repeat something 5, 10, 15, or even 25 times! If you need to brush up on your embroidery skills, select an embroidery project (start small if you are a beginner), and set a goal to make 5 or 10 of them by the end of the week. In my case, I had one day to get them all done.

I was thankful to have an embroidery friend come help with the mass production. As we talked, she mentioned how much she learned from the repetition of embroidering the same design over and over again.

We all go home from a hands-on embroidery class saying, “I need to embroider another of these (fill in the blank) so I remember what I learned. Yet so often, other things keep jumping in front of our desired practice time. And then we forget what we learned.

Repeating the same task over and over again can be tedious, but it’s also one of the most effective ways to learn and improve. When you repeat a skill or task multiple times, your brain begins to pick up patterns and identify areas that need improvement. Over time, you’ll become more comfortable and confident in your abilities, and you’ll start to see significant improvements in your work.

Here are some gentle ways you can put the philosophy of “Embroidery Repetition” into practice immediately:

Practice regularly:
Dedicate regular time to practicing the skill you want to learn. Consistent practice will help reinforce what you’ve learned and help you build upon it.

Start small:
Begin with small tasks and gradually increase their complexity. This will help you develop confidence and competence over time.

Seek feedback:
Ask for feedback from others who have more experience than you. This can help you identify areas where you need to improve and give you pointers on how to do it.

Learn from your mistakes:
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, use them as learning opportunities. Analyze what went wrong and use that insight to make adjustments for the future.

Find a mentor:
Having a mentor can be incredibly beneficial, as they can provide guidance, offer advice, and share their own experiences with you.

Remember, learning is a journey, and it’s okay to make mistakes along the way. Keep practicing, stay curious, and don’t give up!
