Why Won’t My Embroidery Machine Recognize My Hoop?

You are all ready to embroider and the embroidery machine will not recognize the hoop? It keeps saying “Attach Correct Hoop”. What is going on?

Embroidery machines have been smart from day one or at least when machines could accept multiple sizes of embroidery hoops. The embroidery machine developers figured out a safety net to help users from accidentally putting on the wrong size hoop.

Various machine brands have slightly different ways that the machine can detect which size of hoop is on the machine before beginning to embroider. In the end, it saves embroiders from an embroidery catastrophe.

BUT…if users do not tell the machine which hoop they are actually using, the machine will deny them their right to embroider until they fix the problem.

How Does an Embroidery Machine Know Which Hoop it on the Machine?

Hoops have different sizes of notches or brackets to help the machine identify which hoop is attached. If the wrong size of the hoop is attached, the machine will not embroider.

Pfaff and Husqvarna hoops have different sizes of brackets for the machine to help identify the attached hoop as shown here.

Bernina embroidery machines have a different amount of notches or mountains that help the machine recognize the hoop size.

Bernina hoops have mountain notches to tell the machine which hoop is attached.

Magnetic Hoop vs Standard Hoop

The most common problem we have seen lately is on the Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff embroidery machines. Users are selecting the hoop with an “M” next to the size. The “M” stands for METAL or MAGNETIC hoop. If using a standard hoop be sure to choose the hoop WITHOUT the “M”.

This video talks about selecting the right hoop in the first 2 minutes!

Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff Have Over 18 Hoop Sizes Available!

Tip for Higher End Embroidery Machine Owners…

Make your own hoop list. The only thing you need to remember is when you purchase a new hoop, you must add it to the “hoop list”. Go into SETTINGS and find where the hoop list is. This video will guide you through setting up your personal hoop list.

Note for Husqvarna Viking Designer Jade 35 and Pfaff Creative 1.5 Embroidery Machines

These machines have an abbreviated hoop list. If a hoop is not on the list, you will not be able to use it.

Sad story…I sold a Husqvarna Viking Jade 35 owner a 170 x 100 hoop and then had to turn around and return it because it was not on the hoop list. I did not know this until I looked at the abbreviated list of hoops on these two machines. Make sure your machine has the hoop listed before making a purchase.

Hoop TIPS For Bernina Owners

Bernina Owners Tip: Hoops must be selected prior to attaching the hoop to the embroidery unit. If the wrong hoop is attached, the machine will not let you into the embroidery area.

Also, if the hoop is not fully attached, meaning it did not have a double click, a Bernina can not read the bumps (think of the hoop understanding Braille) for the machine to recognize which size of hoop is being attached.

  2. Karen says:

The Hoop information is great to know. It is helpful to be able to avoid some frustration..even as little as not putting in that hoop to Thank you so much.

    1. Sara says:

      You are welcome Karen!

  3. Pat Rogers Saskatoon Saskatchewan says:

Thanks for this Sara. I have had the same problem with hoops. One has to be vigilant and not get too frustrated when this happens. I look forward to your weekly video.

I really enjoyed learning about how the different brands recognize the various sizes of hoops. Some of my guesstimates were correct. Thanks You!!

      Thank you! Sara

  6. Carol Kozik says:

Can you put a Jumbo Master Snap hoop on a Bernina 770QE? It won’t read it and diverts to another hoop. Wanted to use this jumbo hoop for edge to edge quilting…..,,realizing you can’t use the full left side of the hoop.

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Carol,

Yes, you can use the Jumbo Master Snap hoop on a Bernina. You do need to keep the embroidery design within the oval space on the hoop on the screen. You are correct. You can not embroider into the corners of the Snap hoop. Sara

  7. Susan says:

    Two questions:
    1. Do magnetic hoops cause a problem with computerized sewing machines because of the strong magnets affecting the computer chips?
    2. Carol above asks about the Jumbo Master Snap hoop for a Bernina 770 QE, My question is do you select the closest oval sized hoop to match the Snap Hoop?

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Susan,

There is no problem using a magnetic hoop (or even a magnetic pincushion) on a Bernina computerized sewing machine. Yes, select the closest hoop size to the size you purchased. Sara

  8. Marti says:

I also didn’t know about adding hoop sizes or the m for my magnetic hoop that I seem to have misplaced. Thanks Sara

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Marti,

If you own a Husqvarna Viking or a Pfaff embroidery machine, there is an area in the SETTINGS that will allow you to add purchased hoops to the MY HOOPS list.

  9. Chris Henson says:

I wish I could come to South Dakota!!!! My mother also grew up in Idaho so it makes me wish I could travel your way!!!! A live teacher is the best!!!

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Chris,

Thank you! If you ever get this way, please let us know.

  10. Meghan McClendon says:

It’s 2020 and I am still using my Husqvarna Viking Topaz 30. While there are now many magnetic hoops available, unfortunately my machine only recognized the 180×130M for magnetic hoops and not my 100x100M hoops as there is no setting for that. I might have to upgrade to a Topaz 50 or diamond. This is sad as I only need a small area to embroider.

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Meghan,

See if you have the most current update for your Husqvarna Viking update. This is something you can do yourself with the included directions. Click here to find the update:

I do not recall ever having any trouble with Topaz 30 machines not being able to use all the magnetic hoops.

If you do have the current update, make sure it is on your “My Hoops” list which is updated in the settings/tools area of your machine.

  11. Erin Siggard says:

    Can I use a 360 x 260 hoop on my Brilliance 80?

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Erin,

The 360 x 260 hoops are for the Viking EPIC 1 or EPIC 2 machines.

  12. Emilie Jane Armstrong says:

    Dear Sara,
Thank you so much for all your videos which have been invaluable since I purchased my Husqvarna Jade 35. On the whole I’m delighted with the machine. However, it very often does not recognise the hoop I have attached. I purchased a 80×80 and 120×120 hoop – both are husqvarna hoops, so there should be no issue and both sizes are on the predefined hoop list for this machine. When I try to embroider something with one of these hoops attached (a design that is the right size for the hoop), even after selecting the right size in the menu it still says ‘Attach correct hoop’ and there’s nothing I can do except take the hoop off and try again, even switch the machine off and on. I’ve just spent half an hour doing this and finally it’s working, but I can’t do this each time -it’s driving me crazy! Have you ever heard of this type of issue before?
    Best wishes,

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Emilie,

Sounds like your local Husqvarna Viking store needs to take a look at your machine. Sorry I could not help.

  13. Joan says:

Can the 200 x 200 Quilter’s Hoop be used on the Husqvarna Designer Epic 2 sewing machine?

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Joan,

Yes, you can use the 200 x 200 hoop on the Viking Epic 2.

  14. Joan says:

Can the Mega Endless Hoop (260 x 150) be used on the Husqvarna Viking Designer Epic 2 sewing machine? Thank you

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Joan,

Yes, this hoop should be on the hoop list for the Viking epic 2.

  15. Bunny says:

Can the smaller endless hoop that I have with my Designer SE be used on Epic 2

    1. Sara says:

  16. Marilou says:

I have a Offaly creative 4.5 and I have two questions:
    1. I accidentally did not take off the hoop when my machine stated so and now I went back to my embroidering, I cannot seem to get back to stitch number. I have already had this machine dealer service this machine a month ago, how may I restructure the embroidery hoop.
    2. My thread keeps breaking upon embroidering only
Thanks and I extremely enjoy your tutorial

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Marilou,

You can always restart your embroidery design and work from the first stitch to the stitch or color you are on. Have you tried different brands of embroidery thread? Not all embroidery thread is created the same. Try an Isacord or Robison-Anton polyester embroidery thread and see if a better brands works in your machine.

  17. Yvonne says:

My machine won’t accept the 120 x 12/ hoop but accepts the larger one

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Yvonne,

Which Husqvarna Viking or Pfaff embroidery machine are you using? On some models, the hoop must be added to the HOOP LIST.

If it continues to not be recognized, you will need to visit your local store for a quick fix.

  18. Linda says:

can the mega hoop 360 x 150 be added to my Designer Diamond?
I can’t find it on the list

    1. Sara says:

      Hi Linda,

That particular hoop was originally a 3-position hoop for older Viking embroidery machines. It is not designed to work on your Viking Designer Diamond. You already have a 360 x 200 hoop that came with your machine. We recommend you use that hoop instead.
